What not to do

Nick Bradbury has found a competitor who is using the data files from TopStyle and is passing them off as their own. Nick posts about how borrowing from others can be a benefit to all, but blatantly stealing is simply going too far. He has asked for your feedback on how to proceed.

Along these same lines, in a series of posts made yesterday in the news section of Stylegala (see Powerhouse Fraud & Fraud Web Designers), a web design company was brought to task for posting links to sites that were supposedly part of their portfolio but were in fact designs by other well known designers. The owner of the company has apparently fired the employee responsible and has apologized to the designers whose works were referenced. The effect of the public outpouring was not very favorable based on the site’s current home page.

Yes I was unaware that a employee had STOLE the designs from Zeldman and PixelPlain…I have been working with the same one client for the past year and have always wanted to get a freelance site up to attract business. I paid a soon to be grad to do this and to be involved in future work. Again I didn’t profit from any of this stolen work and took it down ASAP and sent emails to Zeldman and PixelPlain explaining. Should I have checked her references? Absolutely! I let her have complete control as she showed me the terific designs from Zeldman and PixelPlain and said they were her own. Seeing the designs I thought her work was great and just let her have at it. It was my responsibility but ABSOLUTELY NOT my doing. I also sent a letter to the dean of her college explaining what she did. Again, and for the last time, I do apologize to Zeldman and Pixel Plain for this situation. I have learned from this and I will neve let it happen again.
